Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden presents the online catalog of the project Conditions of a Necessity (2020-2022).

The inaugural project by co-directors Çağla Ilk and Misal Adnan Yıldız was created in September 2020 as an assembly that brought together six visual arts classes and two theater classes from all over Germany.

The project was subsequently expanded to include the art theorist and artist Patricia Reed and the artist Egemen Demirci, who acted as mediators and curators during the twelve-month project development with the artists from the various classes.

In response to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the cancellation of the in-class colloquia and final performances, Conditions of a necessity initiated a two-week studio-like gathering in digital and physical spaces. At the instigation of the Kunsthalle management, an informal framework was created in which non-individualistic forms of work, collectively determined forms of organization, communication and collaborative decision-making could be practiced.

During the lockdown phases of the Covid-19 pandemic, conditionsofanecessity.net also provided a platform through which, among other things, class colloquia were streamed live on twitch and thus artistic-academic educational and exchange formats took place publicly.

More than a year later, from December 2021 to January 2022, Conditions of a Necessity was brought back to the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden in the form of an exhibition as the culmination of the projects developed.

Conditions of a necessity was a multi-layered artistic, curatorial and academic project that interwove the conditions of contemporary education, its power structures and decision-making processes with future-oriented methods of decentralization, collectivization and collaboration, as well as physical and digital spaces. It must therefore also be considered a showcase project for museum digital platforms during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Two years after the end of the project, the archive has now been completed. The Kunsthalle Baden-Baden is therefore publishing the project catalog in the form of the website conditions-of-a-necessity.net, which will contain the archive material of the long-term project as well as numerous interviews and essays.

On November 25, 2024 at 7 pm, Çağla Ilk and Misal Adnan Yıldız, Patricia Reed and Egemen Demirci as well as the designers of the catalog, Quentin Creuzet and Domitille Debret, will describe the setting, review the process and present the numerous levels and results of the project in an opening talk.

We cordially invite you to follow the event live on the YouTube channel of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.
