A kiss is (not) just a kiss

15.09.–21.10.2012

Artist

  • Selma Alaçam

Curator

  • Johan Holten

Curatorial assistance

  • Jakob Racek

In her work Selma Alaçam follows traces of her own German-Turkish biography, closely observing the psychological and social experiences that result from it. Thus, she has developed an analytic approach to understanding the delicate hues within cultural, social and religious poles. Her interest lies in fractures and the complex relationship between Islamic and Western cultural spheres. She works in video, photography and installation. Ultimately her goal as an artist is not so much to convey answers but to gently raise awareness for and reflect on socio-cultural questions and problems.

Selma Alaçam has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, from 2010 to 2011 in Prof. Silvia Bächli's master class. Her work is currently on display at the exhibition  „TOP 12 - Meisterschüler der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe“ at the Städtische Galerie in Karlsruhe. Selma Alaçam lives and works in Karlsruhe.

At the opening on September 14, 2012, at 7 PM Johan Holten will welcome and Jakob Racek will introduce the artist and her work. Afterwards there will be a concert with traditional Sufi music by Ali & Mehmet Ongun at the Café Kunsthalle.
