On her deathbed, an old Russian aristocrat confides a closely guarded secret to her son-in-law. She had hidden her valuable jewels in one of the twelve chairs of her old salon set, which had been expropriated after the revolution. Her son-in-law, the former aristocratic marshal and bon vivant Ippolit Matveyevich Vorobyaninov, who ekes out a living as a registrar in a provincial town, immediately sets off in search of the treasure. The twelve chairs are now scattered all over the country. Ostap Bender, a shrewd, colorful crook who energetically takes over the hunt for the diamonds, is already hot on his heels at the first stop.
A fantastic journey begins from north to south and from west to east, by sea and by land, from the village to the metropolis. The odd couple have a rival in father Fjodor. He had extracted the last confession from the once wealthy aristocrat and thus knows her secret as the third in the alliance.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov and spectacularly combines the dramaturgy of a treasure hunt and chase with a dense world of images of people and places. It tells of yesterday and today, of the reality of people in the CIS states and of the universal humanity of our own actions. A great social utopia thus blends with the individual hope for personal happiness, be it through money or love. ZWÖLF STÜHLE succeeds in showing a funny, tragic and humane world: it is always both a grand design and a patched-up existence.
