Description
Can art lend a voice to segments of the population that go unheard? Can it open up new spheres of action and empower the powerless? The exhibition explores these questions through contemporary works of art.
Flight and displacement in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez are themes addressed in the large-scale installation La Promesa by Teresa Margolles, which is being shown for the first time in Europe. The murals of Egyptian artist Alaa Awad bear witness to a new form of protest in the Arab Spring. The works take on local relevance through the neighborhood initiative of the Prinzessinnengartin from Berlin’s Kreuzberg, which developed the Urban Gardening Project together with local school children and refurbished the museum’s cafe with an ecological and sustainable design.
