This publication groups together Elizabeth Peyton’s portraits of musicians such as David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, Pete Doherty, Jonas Kaufmann and Jessye Norman in moments of performance for the first time. Expressed in these portraits is Peyton’s intensive focus on the vulnerable and at the same time expressive moment of artistic creativity: that moment in which the musician appears before their audience. The photographs, snapshots from live performances that underlie most of her works, are also presented in the exhibition catalogue alongside the artist’s works and with equal weighting. The catalogue brings together oil paintings and works on paper from the last 20 years.
