Description
The catalog was published on the occasion of the exhibition “BILDERBEDARF. The Civic and the Arts.” (20.10.2012- 17.02.2013) at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.
“This exhibition puts forth the idea that an element of the public mandate of a publicly funded art institution consists in meeting the existing demand for images and symbols relevant to the processes that civil society is undergoing. It does not, however, intend to claim that every artist whose work is politically or socially engaged has a correspondingly direct effect on society. Rather, artists and curators often examine significant issues without being able to determine if this has an impact. A fact that is often used as proof, not least by critics and journalists, of the inability of art to influence society. However, anyone looking to the recent past will know better.”
